I am an economist with advanced degrees in both Economics and Russian and East European Studies. I have frequently been a visiting researcher at the Bank of Finland’s Institute for Emerging Economies (BOFIT); and I am a network fellow/member of CES-ifo and the Progam on New Approaches to Research and Security in Eurasia (PONARS). In 2014, my article on business associations in Russia, co-authored with Laura Solanko, was awarded the Russian National Prize in Applied Economics. This site highlights my recent research, much of it on Russian society and the shorter and longer term consequences of the shock(s) of the early 1990s. I also provide links to syllabi of recent electives that I have enjoyed designing and teaching at Middlebury.
